Midsummer was considered to be a time of magic, and anything to do with nature was thought to have a special power. No Midsummer celebration is complete without Små grodorna, a dancing game in which people of all ages hop around the pole while singing about little frogs. Today organized Swedish Midsummer festivals typically include exhibitions of folk dancing in traditional costumes, as well as ring dances and games for people of all ages to join in. The tradition of dancing around the Midsummer pole is an old one, though of course the dances have changed over the centuries. Reflecting this history, some maypoles are still decorated with a rooster or other bird at the top. These so-called parrot-shooting contests became very popular throughout Europe. Among other contests archers would compete in shooting at a bird (real or fake) placed at the top of a tall pole. Though the tradition of decorating the maypole with leaves seems to be a Germanic addition, the origins of the maypole itself date back to early medieval festivals in France, when the Carolingian kings would muster their troops on May 1. Some sources also attribute the perpetuation of the term majstång, or maypole, to the archaic Swedish word maja, meaning “to decorate with green leaves.” Since spring comes later to Sweden it was hard to find the greenery to decorate the pole on May 1, so the tradition was moved to Midsummer. It came to Sweden in the late Middle Ages from Germany, where the pole was decorated with leaves and raised on May 1 (hence the name). ![]() ![]() As it turns out, the maypole is a comparatively new part of Swedish Midsummer tradition. Instead the focus of Midsummer celebrations is the maypole (or Midsummer pole) decorated with greenery and flowers. This was once part of the Swedish festival as well, but these days the bonfire is most associated in Sweden with Walpurgis Night celebrations on April 30. In many countries the summer solstice is celebrated with huge outdoor bonfires. This took effect the following year, and as a result, the observance of Midsummer now varies between June 20 and 26. In 1952 the Swedish Parliament decided that Midsummer should always be celebrated on a weekend. John the Baptist was born six months before Jesus, meaning that his birthday could be equally conveniently associated with pagan summer festivals. By establishing December 25 conveniently close to the winter solstice as the date when Jesus was born, the Church was able to absorb the pagan midwinter festival of Yule into the Christian celebration of Christmas. Rather than trying to stamp out such pagan festivals, the early Catholic Church found it useful to coopt them by associating them with Christian celebrations. John the Baptist, but the holiday has its roots in a pre-Christian solstice festival. Traditionally, Midsummer was celebrated on June 24, the feast day of St. In Sweden, Midsummer’s Eve is one of the most important days of the year, rivaling Christmas with its festive spirit and traditions. Given Scandinavia’s long, dark winters, it’s not surprising that the arrival of summer is a big deal throughout the Nordic countries. ![]() In May 2014 Blurb acquired MagCloud, a self-publishing platform for magazines, under a licensing agreement from HP. Luke had to research and discover Jesus for himself in order to share him effectively with others. How does Like’s careful investigation make you more confident in reading the book of Luke?.What kinds of questions do you imagine Theophilis would want Luke to answer in his writing?.What would you expect from the writings of a doctor? How would Luke being a Gentile give him a different prospective than Jews or Christians?.How do you know that what the author has written is true? In other words, what criteria do you use to determine something as true?.He will start at the beginning, using first person interviews with eye witnesses or people that knew them and not move on to the next period in Jesus’ life until he has exhausted the evidence of the period being studied. Luke’s work is written within 60 years of Jesus life on earth and his research technique, as a doctor, is well suited for the task.Understanding the story clearly will determine his ability to continue service under Caesar and possibly how to stay alive if he does so. He must make certain that information given him in the past regarding Jesus and the Christians is true. His audience too is neither Christian or Jew, he is the “Most Excellent Theophilus”, a Greek in the Roman government and apparently a patron of Luke who is paying for his personal research into this man Jesus. He is about to begin an exhaustive investigative biography of Jesus so that his patron can be assured that he has the correct information regarding his claimed authenticity. He has no preconceived notions about his study. He is a Gentile, a physician, an accomplished writer and well versed in the Greek language. Why, because the author, Luke, is neither a Christian (follower of Christ) nor a Jew (the primary source for Jesus’ disciples). ![]() For the unbeliever, agnostic or atheist, the two books of Luke, The Gospel of Luke and The Acts of the Apostles, are a good place to start your investigation into the reliability of the Bible as a source of information and into the possibility that you may need to reconsider Jesus as a real person in history.Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. Bible Passage: Luke 1:1-4, 2 Timothy 4:11 ![]() Star Allies, on the other hand, carries forward the Switch’s philosophy of versatile, adaptable multiplayer: One to four people can jump in easily by popping out the Switch kickstand, and the only accessory needed for a maximum multiplayer session is a second set of Joy-Cons. After all that, the free-roaming design of the game resulted in very little actual cooperation. All four players needed to own separate cartridges and systems, and they had to juggle link cables in order to connect their devices. Kirby’s first team-up with three allies, 2004’s The Amazing Mirror for Game Boy Advance, ended up being a total mess. They also offer a great example of how Nintendo’s approach to cooperative gaming has evolved over the years. However, the differences between Star Allies and its predecessors take advantage of the Switch’s strengths as a multiplayer device. This isn’t the first-ever multiplayer Kirby game, or even the first four-player Kirby platformer. It’s a cute feature, but what makes Star Allies truly compelling comes from the way it uses these companions to enable drop-in-drop-out cooperative play for up to four people. They’ll help out to the best of their ability as computer-controlled characters. Whichever critters you ally yourself with, you can bring along up to three monsters as Kirby’s companions. Once you unlock secret “Dream Palace” stages, you can summon those friendly rivals into action through a character roulette. You can even turn most midbosses into your pals. Toss a heart icon at a monster, and it’ll become Kirby’s partner in action. In this adventure, players have a single button used exclusively for befriending enemies, the most charming dedicated command since A Boy and His Blob’s “hug” button. Instead, its real hook is hinted at in the title: Star Allies is all about the power of friendship. Were the leap to HD graphics the entirety of Star Allies’ additions to the Kirby universe, it would be a pleasant but totally missable blip in the series’ history. (Kirby facing off against eldritch horrors from the depths of space is pretty old hat, for that matter.) Compared even to the recent Kirby: Planet Robobot and its wild giant mech-suit sequences, Star Allies plays things incredibly safe, even as Kirby games go. ![]() The back half of the game changes things up a bit, but you’ll still be working with familiar skills and mechanics even as the environments grow decidedly more cosmic in nature. en route to predictable showdowns with the likes of King Dedede, Whispy Woods and Meta Knight. The first two worlds that appear in Star Allies - of four total - take players through the familiar turf of Grass Land and Planet Popstar, where you’ll hoover up series regulars like Waddle Dee and Poppy Bros. There’s a lot of water being treaded here. In that sense, you can almost see Star Allies as the series pausing to take stock before leaping ahead. (The core Kirby games skipped Wii U altogether, with only the wonderful but decidedly nontraditional Kirby and the Rainbow Curse repping the franchise on that ill-starred console.) There’s no denying that, as with every classic franchise, experiencing familiar characters and beats through glossy high-fidelity visuals has a certain compelling charm all its own. Yes, somewhat surprisingly, Star Allies marks the first time HAL Laboratory and Nintendo have published a traditional Kirby platformer in HD. ![]() It pulls together well-worn themes and elements while leaning on two key factors to make it feel fresh: high-definition graphics and four-person multiplayer. Instead, it comes off as something closer to a recap of 25 years of Kirby history. As the series’ first major outing on Switch, Kirby Star Allies seems like the kind of game that would have been designed with an eye toward pushing Kirby into the future. |
